Heartland Robotics is developing a family of low cost and highly intelligent robots that can perform simple tasks in a manufacturing environment, increasing the productivity of the people around them who are doing the more highly skilled and value-added work. The Company is based in Boston's Innovation District and was founded by Rodney Brooks, former Director of the MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and a co-Founder of iRobot Corporation. Heartland's robots can be taken out of the box, taught a task by an untrained factory worker, and be productive in a few hours, eliminating the need for systems integration. They are safe to interact with people at close range and are easy to train and retrain on the fly. They are nothing like any existing industrial robots.
Heartland Robotics is revolutionizing manufacturing robots, and the very nature of what people think a robot can do and be. More importantly, we are driving a new economic reality, making it more competitive to manufacture products in the US, Europe, and Japan, rather than outsourcing to low-cost regions.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be an intrinsic part of a dynamic, collaborative team that believes deeply in the value of what we are doing and that we can achieve it. We think big, but we have a bias for action and "making it happen". While we're changing the world with our visionary invention, we know that customers only pay for successful execution--so we're focused on both. We're out in front anticipating our customers' needs, ahead of the technology, and ahead of expectations. We're humble, we're great, and we're unconventional. Changing the world has never been this much fun.
Principal Mechanical Engineer Mission & Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in development efforts for ground breaking electromechanical systems throughout the entire product life cycle – personally contributing to prototyping, product development, system testing and characterization, manufacturing support and ongoing cost reduction and product improvement activities.
- Drive the adoption of industry best practices for low cost design, design for mass production, design for manufacturing and design for assembly efforts and mentor other team members in these areas.
- Work closely with Product Management and Design functions, as well as other engineering functions, to develop innovative mechanical architectures for new and existing products.
- Lead and manage projects to develop new mechanical systems and sub-components for new and existing products.
- Communicate with vendors, specify and select components, and work closely with customers and product managers to ensure designs meet stated requirements.
- Lead and contribute to a process of continuous improvement and cost reduction for existing product lines.
- Lead and contribute to verification testing and risk analysis activities such as FMEA.
- Support product documentation efforts, including creating technical specifications that implement market and product requirements.
Key Skills & Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering.
- At least 10 years of hands-on experience designing complex electromechanical products for high manufacturing volumes released to customers in a commercial setting.
- Extensive experience developing mass-produced products that utilized a variety of low cost manufacturing processes and techniques.
- Excellent team player; comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic, interdisciplinary team comprising mechanical, electrical, controls and software engineers, as well as designers, product managers and manufacturing and operations personnel.
- Proven track record in all phases of the product development cycle.
- Proficiency in Solidworks, Pro/Engineer or a comparable mechanical CAD package.
- Experience with a variety of prototyping techniques, including SLS, SLA and other rapid prototyping techniques, metal casting techniques, machining, sheet metal fabrication and similar processes.
- Experience fabricating parts using: die casting, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, thermoforming and similar manufacturing processes.
- Experience in industrial automation equipment or robotics is desirable.
- Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience working with a software development team is a plus.
